War in Ukraine: Jewish children airlifted to Israel

In Israel, about 90 Ukrainian children dress up for the joyful Jewish holiday of Purim. They arrived on one of the first flights to bring refugees into the country earlier this month.

All refugees came from an orphanage in the northern city of Zhytomyr. Some of them are orphans, but most come from vulnerable segments of the population and have left relatives in Ukraine.

Ukraine has a large Jewish community. It has been suggested that over 200,000 Ukrainians who are Jewish or have Jewish family ties are eligible for citizenship in Israel. Purim is a holiday dedicated to the historical salvation of the Jews from danger during the time of the Persian Empire.
