Ukraine: Why Russia banned the cartoon “Masyanya”

Masyanya, the mischievous and witty heroine of the online animated series, is very popular among Russian speakers. More than a million people have subscribed to the cartoon’s YouTube channel.

However, the latest issue, which focuses on the war in Ukraine, has drawn both praise and threats. Shortly after the episode was published, Russian authorities banned it and asked cartoon creator Oleg Kuvaev to remove it from his website because it “discredits the armed forces of the Russian Federation.”

The BBC spoke to Oleg Kuvaev, who emigrated from Russia to Israel many years ago, and said that “the war cannot be laughed at.”
