The Harbor Bridge in Sydney – the story of its opening 90 years ago

The Sydney Harbor Bridge was opened to the public on March 19, 1932.

The Clothes Hanger was the brainchild of engineer John Bradfield, who spent 30 years gathering support and overseeing design and construction.

His grandson Peter Bradfield spoke to Witness History on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the bridge’s opening.

“He went through the war, he went through [the Great Depression] and he still managed to get the support he needed to do it,” Mr. Bradfield said.
