WNBA star Brittney Griner is in “good condition” after being detained in Russia on drug charges.
An American Olympic gold medalist who plays for the Phoenix Mercury was reportedly taken into custody at a Moscow airport in February after cannabis oil was found in her luggage.
She could face up to 10 years in a Russian prison if found guilty.
A US embassy official in Moscow was allowed to visit the 31-year-old for the first time on Tuesday.
“We have been able to verify her condition, we will continue to work very closely with her legal team, with her wider network, to ensure she is treated fairly,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told CNN.
“Our official has found that Britney Griner is in good health and we will continue to do our best to ensure that she is treated fairly during this trial.”
Russian news agency TASS reported that last week a Moscow court ruled that Griner could be held until at least May 19.
Center Griner has been playing in Russia during the WNBA off-season since 2015.
