A handshake in space that brought hope to the world

Despite long-standing differences during the Cold War, in 1975 the US and the USSR embarked on a joint flight into space.

The purpose of the operation was the docking of the American Apollo spacecraft with the Soviet-made Soyuz spacecraft.

The collaboration came at a time when diplomatic relations between the two sides seemed to be beginning to improve.

Millions of people watched the live broadcast of the meeting at an altitude of 200 km above the ground.
